1 Corinthians 3 and Purgatory
The Catechism of the Catholic Church cites 1 Corinthians 3 in support of the doctrine of purgatory. (The relevant verses are vv. 10-15.)
I wonder what Paul is trying to say here. What’s interesting is that the two options presented are receiving a reward (v. 14) and being saved, “but only as one escaping through the flames” (v. 15).
Caroling Results
I went caroling with my mother and two friends in my neighborhood this evening.
1. Three people offered us money. A couple others offered us candy. My impression was they they thought we were caroling for charity or something. One lady ran down the street to find us, offered money, and said, “Can’t you just give it to children or something?” My mom awkwardly said no. (Love you,...

A NT Precursor to Monasticism?
We are told in Luke 2:37 that the prophetess Anna “never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.”
I’ve often been somewhat critical of monasticism and asceticism because of a (perceived) lack of biblical precedent for such callings (among other reasons). The prophetess Anna, however, seems to me very much like a nun (i.e., a female nun), whose convent...

White Guilt
This blog post made me think about white guilt.
The idea that white people should feel guilty for things that happened in the past is silly. I have as much control over the slave trade as Jesse Jackson does - I have zero control over it.
Of course, white people have done some horrendous things. So have people of every color. The reason Europeans ended up enslaving Africans wasn’t that...

Gold Sparkles
[name withheld]: I was talking to a girl today who as a Southern Baptist. We talked a bunch about our faiths and then we got to baptism. She, like me, was baptised when she was young; after reexamining the scriptures this past November, though, she realised that her baptism wasn't repentant and she was rebaptised. And I got so excited--we talked for a really long time at my parents' Christmas party about Christianity and apologetics...and then she says, "I sure am glad I got rebaptised. Not only am I certain of my salvaiton, but now I receive gold sparkles on my hands when I worship."
What. Does that mean.
